Voice Stress Analysis

INTRODUCTION TO VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS

Voice Stress Analysis (VSA) originally known as Psychological Stress Evaluation (PSE) is a procedure used for Truth Verification Testing / Detection of Deception (DOD). It is conducted by using a laptop computer and microphone, together with specialist training provided by an acknowledged expert in the field. VSA is not Layered Voice Analysis (LVA). LVA is on the same level as computer games and is good to use at house parties.   See LVA dangers.

VSA technology has been used for over 30 years. VSA software, known as Digital VSA or DVSA has dramatically improved on outdated, analogue technology. Thousands of various VSA and DVSA systems are in use worldwide. Over 1500 US law enforcement agencies use VSA. The US Department of Defence uses VSA in its fight against worldwide terrorism. All Western Intelligence agencies use DVSA as well as other DOD technologies and techniques.

Since its inception in the early 1970’s, VSA detection-of-deception techniques is now utilized throughout the world by law enforcement investigators, arson investigators, military intelligence and counterintelligence units, psychologists, psychiatrists, insurers and government agencies. VSA technology is effectively utilized worldwide in locations such as the European Communities, South Africa, Central and South America, Middle East, Asia, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the Balkans. Now through DVSA software, the science is easier to use and more effective than ever before.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Truth Verification Examination process was administered by means of AVSAPRO ™© digital voice-stress analysis. AVSAPRO is a validated means of psycho-physiological detection of deception (PDD). AVSAPRO captures and records .wav voice responses (phonemes) in spectrograph format. The recorded spectrograph is displayed in standardized gullwing form. AVSAPRO processes the recorded phonemes in a neural network database, trained with >15,000 known-solution phonemes in format of “No’. AVSAPRO utilizes PDD validated question constructs of Cleve Backster and John Reid. AVSAPRO prohibits the use of non-validated question constructs. AVSAPRO prohibits the violation of homeostasis restoration phase in between each question. A minimum waiting period is enforced and cannot be manipulated. The exclusive, integral cadence control feature of AVSAPRO ensures that the subject response is captured at the same point in the response curve of every individual examinee, thus producing consistency and reliability into each examination. AVSAPRO automatically rotates each Relevant Question from chart to chart, thus eliminating common, but serious errors that occur in manual voice-stress systems. The trained neural network of AVSAPRO prevents false negative or false positive calls that can occur during manual scoring. AVSAPRO decisions are based upon a neural network trained with thousands of known-solution outcomes, made by PDD experts over a decade. Subject responses to the question stimuli were recorded on a notebook computer via Microsoft Operating System and Microsoft Utilities, into AVSAPRO, which fully integrates with all MS platforms. The examiner was trained in various PDD modules by Clifton Coetzee (TVT Centre SA / PolyVSA Institute / Polygraph Institute Western Cape) and is duly certified to administer voice stress examinations. The examiner is a member of SAPAVSA.

 Who uses the VSA?

All Intelligence Agencies worldwide use both polygraph and VSA technologies. Most Sheriff Departments across the USA have been switching to VSA. VSA can be utilised covertly whilst Polygraph cannot be utilised covertly. VSA can be used telephonically – a subject can be tested anywhere in the world, as long as there is a reliable and clear telephone line available.

VSA

VSA collects data from the voice. One of the psycho-physiological responses to lying (lying induces psychological stress in a subject as lying is contrary to default human behaviour) is an involuntary tightening of muscles surrounding the larynx. The result is a lowering of the frequency at which the subject’s voice normally oscillates. This oscillation has been termed the “Lippold Tremor”. The frequency lowering of the “Lippold Tremor” creates an unmistakable tracing, which the trained examiner will score as Deception Indicated. There is no way that the subject can manipulate the Lippold Tremor. “Playing” with the voice will make no difference. The subject is totally unable to manipulate the Lippold Tremor. A subject would have ingested a vast number of pharmaceuticals to affect the Lippold Tremor to the extent hat he/she would be visibly intoxicated and therefore unsuitable to be examined/tested.

VSA is reliably accurate to the extent that certain polygraph manufacturers have added a version of VSA to their instrumentation. That is tacit admission that VSA is a reliable parameter.
